The World Wide Tours bus crash took place at about 5:30 a.m. on March 12, 2011, in the southbound lanes of the New England Thruway segment of Interstate 95 within Pelham Bay Park at the border between the Bronx and Westchester County, New York. The bus was returning to Chinatown, Manhattan, from the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. It swerved and collided with a metal sign pole, which ripped through it and tore off most of its roof. Thirteen passengers died at the scene, two died at hospitals, and all seventeen others on board were injured.^[1]

Some surviving passengers have said that the driver, Ophadell Williams, fell asleep at the wheel. He was not charged initially, pending investigation.^[2] Williams said that he was awake and sober at the time of the accident.^[3] The bus driver blamed the accident on a tractor-trailer that he swerved to avoid, causing the bus to flip on its side and crash into an overhead highway sign which split the bus in half. Preliminary NTSB findings[edit]

A preliminary report by the NTSB in April 2011 found that the bus was going 64 miles per hour (103 km/h) at the time of the crash, 14 miles per hour faster than the posted 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) speed limit. The report found that the bus had been exceeding the speed limit on I-95 45 seconds before it veered off the highway. Prosecution of Ophadell Williams[edit]

The driver, Ophadell Williams, was charged by the Bronx County District Attorney's office with 54 felony and misdemeanor counts, including charges of criminally negligent homicide and manslaughter. Prosecutors argued that Williams was too tired to get behind the wheel, and was so sleep-deprived that his actions were no different than someone driving under the influence.^[6]

Williams was held in custody from September 2011 until the end of his trial due to being unable to meet his $250,000 bail.^[6] On December 7, 2012, the jury found Williams not guilty of all charges except one count of misdemeanor aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Due to spending over a year in jail, his sentence was commuted to time served.^[6]

Resorts World Bimini Bahamas is a 750-acre Caribbean beachfront resort and casino located on North Bimini Island. It is operated by the Malaysia-based Genting Group.^[1] Their corporate office for the southeast USA is located in downtown Miami, Florida. The resort is located in Bimini, Bahamas, 42 miles east of Miami, Florida. Estimated cost to be built is US$220 Million.^[2]

History and development[edit]

In June 2012, Genting Group signed a deal to open Resorts World Bimini Bay. It included a partnership between Genting Malaysia Berhad and RAV Bahamas, the developer of Bimini Bay and the Rockwell Island Beach Estates.^[3] The Resorts World Bimini Casino opened in June 2013. It is the only casino on the island and the closest offshore casino to South Florida. In late June, 2013, Resorts World introduced the MS Bimini Superfast,^[4] a German built ship that brings passengers from Miami to Bimini.^[5][6][7][8]

Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Rt. Honorable Perry G. Christie, and the Chairman of the Genting Group, Mr. K.T. Lim, were in attendance at the opening ceremony of the new pier. Most of the cabinet ministers of the Bahama Islands were also present. Mr. Christie said that projects such as the development of Resorts World Bimini will lead to more economic development for Bahamians.^[9]

The opening of the pier is phase one of a comprehensive, three-phase development plan for North Bimini Island by Resorts World Bimini.^[10] Also included in phase one is the opening of a temporary customs and immigration facility. Beginning in late 2014 phase two will be undertaken, which will include the construction of a permanent facility for customs and immigration. The final phase will begin during the summer of 2015, adding a restaurant, beach club, craft market and a variety of water sports.^[11]

Resorts World Bimini is also building a 307-room luxury hotel on Bimini, and has recently acquired 16.2 more acres of land next to the resort.^[12]
